Major UK airport

South-East England

To mitigate hydrocarbon-contaminated soil caused by planes taking off every 45 seconds, and foster biodiversity, a major UK airport enlisted the help of the UK’s experts in soil regeneration – Ruskins. The result was a 78% increase in biodiversity and a 72% boost in carbon storage.

Challenges

With both sites suffering from compacted, low-quality soil, this led to poor grass coverage and drainage. Additionally, the soil had been contaminated by the hydrocarbons from aircraft taking off.

The aim of the soil biology trial has three primary objectives:

1. Improve soil health

Our aim was to increase the carbon storage and biodiversity at the sites.

2. Convert pollutants

Our soil biology solutions are designed to convert these to safe elements.

3. Boost presentation

Our client wanted a solution that would make the grassy areas look greener.

Solution

Following the treatment of our trusted and highly effective soil biology solutions, the two sites witnessed a remarkable transformation in their appearance. In fact, the variation in the readings between the control areas and those that had been treated was noticeable and highly encouraging.

Enhanced appearance

The difference in the areas that were treated with our soil biology solutions was clearly visible.

Stronger grass

The enhanced soil health means the grass is healthier and more resilient.

Improved drainage

Areas with good soil health will now drain up to 10 times more efficiently than untreated sites.
